Downdraft vents

Are you familiar with downdraft vents? Include you knowledge in our defintion by clicking the EasyEdit button.

Instead of being placed over the cooking area, a downdraft blower is built into a base cabinet. It exhausts air by pulling it down through vents placed on the sides and back of the cooktop or you can buy a separate blower with a vent that raises up behind the cooktop while you’re cooking and then lowers out of view when you’re done. This vent is great for cleaning air around island cooktops, where a hood wouldn’t work. They also enhance decorating possibilities by providing a more subtle ventilation method than an overhanging hood.

Do you use your downdraft vent in a kitchen island? Do they take up lots of cabinet space around your range? Share your experience with the rest of the Kitchen and Bath Ideas community.

scorpyowmn Downdraft Vent in Island 0 Sunday, 5:44 PM EDT by scorpyowmn

We are remodeling our kitchen in a mountain home. The ceiling is 14' vaulted, and an overhead vent is out of the question. We have already purchased a slide-in stove. The problem is all the downdraft vents I have looked at say they can only be used with a cooktop because of the space taken up by the blower box.
Two questions:
1) Can the blower box be mounted on the reverse side? (loss of cabinet space behind the stove is not a problem.)
2) Is the internal blower box completely removed when using an external blower?
I assume the external blower would be the way to go, but with the cost be nearly twice as much, a way to use the internal one would be great.
Thanks in advance for any and all advice.
