Downdraft Vent in Island
May 18 2008, 5:44 PM EDT
We are remodeling our kitchen in a mountain home. The ceiling is 14' vaulted, and an overhead vent is out of the question. We have already purchased a slide-in stove. The problem is all the downdraft vents I have looked at say they can only be used with a cooktop because of the space taken up by the blower box. Two questions: 1) Can the blower box be mounted on the reverse side? (loss of cabinet space behind the stove is not a problem.) 2) Is the internal blower box completely removed when using an external blower? I assume the external blower would be the way to go, but with the cost be nearly twice as much, a way to use the internal one would be great. Thanks in advance for any and all advice. 5 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you?

Were you able to find out anything about this? I have the exact same problem. We purchased a slide in range and I need to find a way to vent it. I found once source that said you can use it with a slide in range, however, it requires an external motor which is, like you said, twice as much.

I spoke with a couple of contractors and one of the manufacturers and learned that the vent itself (the telescoping part) can be reversed, so that any protrusions (blower box, etc.) will not be in the way of the stove. One drawback, however, is doing this will void the warranty. And, it must be used with the external blower. I am rethinking the whole vent thing.

Yes, we have changed our mind as well. We are putting in an island hood. I really didn't want to as I thought it would obstruct the view, but we found one that has a small glass hood and not at a bad price - about what we were going to spend on the downdraft system. We spoke directly with a manufacturer and they said it cannot be used with a gas stove as it would pull the flame off the burner. Oh well, life is full of "change opportunities"! I hope the rest of your project is going well! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

isn't it exciting remodeling ??? i just love it. when i redid my kitchen (about a year ago), i found custom range hoods online, and i actually ended up dealing with them. it surprised me since it was a first for me, but all worked out & i'm so happy with my new kitchen. Cheers. Sam
